Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

Since December 1990 Compulsory Basic Training has been the essential introduction for anyone wishing to ride a motorbike or scooter on UK roads. It takes the form of safety-based instruction and is designed to ensure that any potential biker has the ability and aptitude to stay safe, and is a mandatory first step in motorcycle training that precedes any of the A1 licence, A2 licence or unrestricted A licence.

Although many novice bikers call to enquire about taking their CBT test at our training locations, there is actually no test involved, just expert instruction and a demonstration that you can meet the required standards of control and safety. The only testing involved is of your eyesight, and a 20.5 metre distance check is mandatory.

Once you complete your compulsory basic training you’ll be issued with a DL196 certificate. Valid for two years this certificate enables you to ride a motorbike up to 125cc/14.6bhp (or a 50cc moped for 16 year olds) unaccompanied on the road. ‘L’ plates are clearly displayed on the front and rear of your bike. For more information or to book your CBT at our Birmingham motorcycle training centre.
