What days are you open?
Open Road Motorcycle Training is open 7 days a week, plus some bank holidays, and occasionally Sundays too! We are closed for training on Christmas day, boxing day and New Year’s Day, but you may be able to catch one of our staff if you telephone!

How long is the CBT?
The CBT course is a full day course, however finish time varies. The course starts at 08:45 beginning with theory and off road training, then after lunch and a road safety briefing, the road ride will begin. The road ride must be a minimum of 2 hours, however if either yourself or the instructor feel that you need more training time on the road then this will be extended. We like to get all students through the course so are more than happy to stay out longer to ensure that you feel happy and safe to go out on your own.
Will I need my own clothing and motorcycle?
The training school can provide you with equipment such as helmet, jacket, trousers, and gloves, in a wide variety of sizes if needed. We do have some boots available, but we recommend that you bring your own suitable footwear such as walking boots or other sturdy footwear – trainers are not suitable for riding a motorcycle.
Open Road can supply all types of motorcycles from 50cc mopeds and 125cc geared machines for CBT, to 600cc and 700cc motorcycles for your full test. You are more than welcome to use your own machine providing that it is in a road worthy condition with a valid MOT certificate (if over 3 years old), and you have tax and insurance as well.
What motorcycles do you use?
At Open Road, we keep the average age of our fleet down buy regularly purchasing younger vehicles. At the moment, we use all Honda motorcycles, having two Vision 50′s, five CBF 125, PCX125, CB 500 F, CBF 600′s, CB650 F and an NC 700 S. The instructors also all have their own motorcycles.

What is Advanced Motorcycle Training?
Advanced training is simply the name given to development training once you have passed your motorcycle test, it allows you to get the most enjoyment out of riding your motorcycle. It is designed to develop your observation, bike handling and confidence further to make you a safer rider with various tips to help improve your riding enjoyment.
What is the CBT course?
CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training, and was bought in at the end of 1990 as a safety based course to reduce the number of accidents amongst inexperienced riders. If you passed your car test before 2001, you can legally ride a moped (less than 50cc, max speed 31mph) on your licence without completing the CBT course, however we have had students complete it anyway for confidence and safety reasons. Remember, it is not a test, it is a safety based course.
What is A1 test?
This is the only test available for 17 and 18 year olds, and must be taken on a motorcycle with an engine size between 120-125cc, and a top speed of at least 100kph (62.5mph). Once passed, the A1 licence allows you to ride any motorbike up to 125cc and a maximum of 14.6bhp, however this is now a permanent restriction unlike in previous years. Bikes which don’t meet these requirements are unsuitable for your A1 test.
What is A2 test?
This is the new test brought in January 2013 for 19-23 year olds, and must be taken on a motorcycle with an engine size of at least 395cc, and at between 25-35kW (33-47bhp). There is no upper engine size limit, but the power to weight ratio must not exceed 0.2kW/kg, and it must not be derived from a motorcycle of more than double its power. Bikes which don’t meet these requirements are unsuitable for your A2 test.
Once you have passed your, the A2 license allows you to ride any motorbike up to a maximum of 35kW (47bhp), however the power to weight ratio must not exceed 0.2kW/kg, and it must not be derived from a motorcycle of more than double its power.
What is DAS Training?
DAS stands for Direct Access Scheme and refers to the route to get a full, unrestricted license without having to first gain a restricted license. The test has to be taken on a motorcycle with an engine size of at least 595cc and which produces at least 40kW (54.bhp). You have to be 24 years or older or have held your A2 license for at least two years. Once you have completed your test under the DAS, you gain a full category A motorcycle license with no restriction to motorcycle size or power.
